Separate Licensing for Structural Engineers

Presenter: Barry Arnold PE, SE, SECB

In this presentation you will learn what structural licensing and practice restrictions are, why they are needed, how they will affect you in the future, and what you can do to help the process.

Separate licensing for structural engineers has been a hotly debated topic for many years.  It has drawn much attention and commentary from both sides of the debate.  With the current changes to the NCEES SE examination, the ever-changing codes we use, increasing complexity of  the buildings, materials and products we design,  it is timely to address why separate SE licensing is becoming more acceptable and preferred by many states and engineers as an aid to help them protect the public.

Speaker: Barry Arnold has been a practicing consulting structural engineer for 21 years and seen the landscape of the profession change dramatically.

He served on the Board of the Structural Engineers Association of Utah (SEAU) for 5 consecutive years.  He was selected president of the SEAU in 2004.  He currently serves the structural engineering profession as: the SEAU’s Delegate to NCSEA; a Member of the NCSEA’s Structural Licensing Committee; and, on the NCSEAs Board.

Barry received the highest honor awarded a professional engineer in Utah by being selected as the Engineer of the Year by the Utah Engineers Council in 2007.

He is a co-owner and vice-president of ARW Engineers and has had the privilege of working on many notable projects.

Barry is a licensed professional engineer in 35 states and 4 Canadian Provinces.
